Exclusive Café in the Heart of Budapest
Designer: Judit Dóró
Introduction
My professional orientation and passion for interior design were shaped in my childhood by my parents' constant desire to create a home. Frequent relocations made space arrangement and home design a natural part of my daily life. During my architectural studies, designing my own home became my first interior design project, where I meticulously crafted the layout and introduced new design elements with engineering precision.
After earning my degree, I worked in construction for five years. A pivotal experience for me was working alongside an award-winning interior designer (recipient of the Ybl Prize) during the construction of the Place Novotel Hotel in Budapest. Over the course of a year, I gained detailed insight into the intricacies of the profession, further solidifying my commitment to interior design.
In my work, I prioritize timelessness and functionality alongside design. I create plans for my clients that reflect optimal solutions, ensuring spaces harmoniously adapt to the needs and styles of their occupants, remaining inspiring even years later.
I have been using the ARCHLine.XP design software since 2009.

Project description:
The space covers a modest area of 25 m², but the high ceiling allowed for the construction of a mezzanine. The two levels are connected by a monolithic, cantilevered staircase. To visually expand the small space, we incorporated a striking feature: a walkable glass floor for the mezzanine, with translucent steel supports beneath it. The underside of the floor is also glass-covered, and we installed light fixtures below it to illuminate the service counter and guest area.
Another space-enhancing feature is the antique mirror cladding along the staircase, which enlarges the space just enough to be functional. We crowned our optical space-enhancing elements with acrylic chairs, whose theatrical style adds a touch of drama. This concept inspired additional elements such as flamingo-themed wallpaper and gold wall sconces in the shape of ginkgo biloba leaves.
To further emphasize the classic design alongside the industrial elements, we incorporated a coffered ceiling on the mezzanine, accented with LED-lit decorative edges. In this relatively small space, we carefully calibrated the light intensity of the fixtures to ensure adjustability based on seasons and times of day. We also redesigned the original façade structure, replacing the previous glass with crystal-clear panels and altering its divisions, making the space brighter and more inviting.
